It is with profound sadness the family announce the passing
of Mary Louise (Cairns) McConaghy, in the 86th year, after a two and a
half year courageous battle with cancer.
Louise passed away peacefully at her home in Quispamsis on
Tuesday October 27, 2020, with her family by her side.
Louise was born on August 7, 1935 in Lower Freetown, PEI. She
was the daughter of the late Georgie and Scott Cairns.
Louise was the beloved wife of Donald McConaghy for almost 60
years. Beloved mother of Scott (Mary Ann) McConaghy, Shelly McConaghy
Hagerman, and Sharon (Andy) Kerr. Loving Grandmother to Brennan,
Annika, Brianna, Samantha, Kayla and Adam. Dear Sister to William
Cairns and Amy Borys. Sister-in-law to Vernon Miller, Rev. William
McDowell, Douglas Ferguson, Gerald (Penny) McConaghy, Shirley (Ted)
Pierrepoint, Stan (Lois) McConaghy, and Joanna McConaghy and many
nieces and nephews.
Louise was predeceased by her parents, sisters Winnifred
McDowell, Helen Millar, Georgina Ferguson. Brothers-in-law John and
Thomas McConaghy, Peter Borys, Louis Scott and sisters-in-l Muriel
Scott and Helen Ann Cairns.
Louise loved Prince Edward Island and spent time there every
year after her marriage in 1960.
In 1974, Don and Louise
purchased a cottage in Gunnings Shore (Malpeque Bay) and after that
she spent the entire summer on the Island with her children. After
Donald retired, they stayed there for six months and the Island was
their second home.
Louise also spent time on the Miramichi River, where she
became a very good fisherlady catching many Atlantic Salmon over the
years. She also enjoyed the winter months in Florida where she made
many friends.
When on the Island, Louise attended Trinity United Church in
Summerside and took part in many of the activities held
there.
Louise enjoyed curling and was a member of the Summerside
Curling Club in the fifties, and in 1958 was the first stone on the
rink that won the Maritime Mixed Curling Bonspiel. After moving to
Fredericton, she was a member of the Capital Winter Club and won many
trophies over the years.
Louise was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi for over
fifty-seven years and enjoyed very much the many friendships she made
along the way.
Louise was a devoted wife and mother to her children. She
enjoyed having them visit and when the grandchildren arrived she loved
having them stay with her as they gave her great joy.
She also enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives with big
dinners and social events.
She will be remembered as a strong, confident, beautiful lady
who looked much younger than her years. Louise instilled to her
children and grandchildren the importance of education and always
putting family first. A resilient lady of great faith, she was loved
and respected by all.
She will be dearly
missed.
